'Innovation' is the catchphrase of the twenty-first century all over the world. Simply said, innovation is the act of transforming ideas into new or improved commodities, services, or applications.
India's young, particularly those in higher education institutions (HEIs), play a critical role in establishing a sustainable innovation environment if the country is to become a worldwide innovation powerhouse.
As a result, all higher education institutions should ideally have a thorough and practical framework for converting research into inventions. In their early years, this ecosystem will motivate, excite, and develop young pupils by introducing them to fresh ideas and procedures that will result in inventive operations.
The Hon'ble Prime Minister of India has declared the decade 2010-20 as the 'Decade of Innovation,' to ignite the purpose of igniting the creative potential of every Indian. India has improved its position in the world arena in terms of innovation, moving from 86th place five years ago to 57th this year.
The Ministry of Education (MoE), Government of India, launched the Atal Ranking of Institutions on Innovation Achievements (ARIIA) initiative to systematically rank all major higher educational institutions and universities in India on parameters regarding "Innovation and Entrepreneurship Development" among students and faculty.
What is ARIIA Ranking?
The ARIIA College Ranking is a nationwide ranking system that was launched by the Ministry of Education in 2018 to rate higher education institutions (HEIs) based on a variety of innovative factors. 'The purpose of the ARIIA ranking is to urge Indian institutions to realign their perspective and establish ecosystems that support high-quality scientific studies, creativity, and entrepreneurship,' according to the Ministry.
An approach to help India become a worldwide innovation powerhouse is to encourage innovation in higher education institutions. As a result, the Atal ranking recognizes organizations that are committed to fostering a sustainable innovation environment.
What are the Objectives of ARIIA Ranking?
One of ARIIA Ranking’s key goals is to raise India's ranking in the Global Innovation Index (GII) to the top 30 in five years (by 2025). The following are the other goals:
- Its goal is to encourage HEIs to emphasize building a robust start-up environment on campus.
- It assesses the innovation and entrepreneurial environment using the following criteria:
- It aspires to place a greater emphasis on the quality of entrepreneurial ecosystems. It estimates how many of these ecosystems exist.
- It assesses the societal and economic effects of HEI inventions and start-ups.

Importance of Atal Ranking
- The ARIIA ranking will motivate Indian universities to rethink their approaches and create ecosystems that will foster high-quality research, innovation, and entrepreneurship.
- ARIIA will focus on the quality of innovations rather than their frequency and will attempt to quantify the true effect of these innovations both globally and nationally.
- The ARIIA rankings will also define the pace and path for organizations' future growth, allowing them to become more internationally competitive and innovative.
ARIIA Ranking Parameters
ARIIA college rankings were created through a nine-point evaluation of the participating organizations. These nine evaluations are called ARIIA Ranking parameters.
- Through a series of exercises, promote an innovative and entrepreneurial mentality.
- Teaching and learning: The HEI offers academic programs in innovation and entrepreneurship (I & E) as well as intellectual property rights (IPR).
- Specialized connectivity and resources to encourage entrepreneurship and innovation at HEI
- Creation of innovations/ideas with the help of HEI and subsequent acknowledgment.
- HEI-supported ventures, as well as awards and recognition obtained.
- Angel and venture capital funds/investments mobilized to assist innovation and start-ups developed at HEI, as well as participation and collaboration of I&E programs.
- Creation and marketing of intellectual property (IP).
- The annual budget for encouraging and financing I&E activities: total costs for I&E and IPR key activities, total income earned by HEI from start-up development activities, and IP and innovation monetization.
- HEI's engagement in the MOE's I&E project.
ARIIA Ranking Parameters and Weightage 2021
The parameters and criteria for the ARIIA 2021 rankings are listed in the table below. "HEI Engagement in MOE's I & E Initiative" is a new part of the parameters list:
